I'm a new beekeeper myself - so new that I'm only just now getting my hives and first nucs this season. I'm a member of my local bee club, though, and I can definitely tell you that it is much more like sitting around having a beer than like being part of an organization. Only you get to completely geek out about bees with people who love talking about bees. And you learn LOTS from those old-time beekeepers. It's worth it, and not so scary.
